Info on the City of Knox
History and trivia of the Knox area.
The City of Knox is situated at the foothills of the Dandenongs. It has about 137,000 inhabitants and covers the suburbs of Bayswater, Wantirna, Wantirna South, Ferntree Gully, Upper Ferntree Gully, The Basin, Boronia, Scoresby, Knoxfield, Lysterfield and Rowville.
The present City of Knox was formed in 1994 and named after Sir George Knox who had settled in Scoresby as an orchardist after the First World War. Sir George Knox had been an influential councilor of the previous Shire of Ferntree Gully, as well as a member of the Victorian Parliament. Although most of the City of Knox has become a residential area, most of us just have to step outside our house to enjoy a beautiful view of green forests growing on the slopes of the Dandenong Ranges. The Dandenong Ranges National Park is not only a favourite destination for tourists. Although now part of the neighbouring Shire of Yarra Glen, many a resident of Ferntree Gully and Boronia enjoys a pleasant walk through its forest of lush green Fern trees and tall Mountain Ash.
